“For The Good Times” – Kris Kristofferson Live Performance of His No. 1 Hit Song

For The Good Times” is a 1970 song written by Kris Kristofferson himself. He wrote the first verse and chorus in 1968 while driving from Nashville to the Gulf of Mexico, but he did not complete the tune and release it until 1970. Later that year, Ray Price recorded a version of the song which topped the U.S. country music charts and was awarded “Song Of The Year” by the Academy of Country Music. “For The Good Times” was Price’s fifth #1 single and spent a total of nineteen weeks on the country chart. Enjoy this great country song!

Kristoffer “Kris” Kristofferson (born June 22, 1936) is an American country music singer, songwriter, musician, and film actor. Born in Brownsville, Texas, he attended Pomona College, where he achieved a degree in literature and specialised in the poetry of Blake. Whilst at college, he published a series of short stories in Atlantic Monthly, and went on to win a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford.
It was in 1958, during his stay in England, that Kristofferson first performed his own music, under the pseudonym ‘Kris Carson’. After graduating from Oxford, Kristofferson served in the US army for five years and, upon being discharged, turned down a teaching post in order to pursue his music career in Nashville.

For the Good Times Lyrics

Kris Kristofferson

Don’t look so sad
I know it’s over
But life goes on
And this old world will keep on turning
Let’s just be glad
We had some time to spend together
There’s no need to watch the bridges
That were burning

Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body
Close to mine
Hear the whisper of the rain drops
Blowing soft against the window
And make believe you love me
One more time
For the good times

I’ll get along
You’ll find another
And I’ll be here
If you should find you ever need me
Don’t say a word about tomorrow
Or forever
There’ll be time enough for sadness
When you leave me

Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body
Close to mine
Hear the whisper of the rain drops
Blowing soft against the window
And make believe you love me
One more time

I love his music and admire his song writing abilities . He will always be my favorite writer and performer. It is so sad that our younger generations do not recognize his name . I understand that he is no longer performing but I would travel anywhere to see him perform one more time .

In an interview with THE AUSTIN CHRONICAL, he mentioned that rehearsing this Austin City Limits concert (which was put out as one of the greatest videos of a live show he and the Borderlords ever did) was incredibly difficult. This was 1981, and he was still reeling from the devastating divorce from Rita Coolidge. He did not write this song for her — he wrote it following the breakup from his first wife Frances — but when he sang the words “there’ll be tie enough for sadness when you leave me..and then starts the chorus again, his voice almost breaks, and he shakes his head in irritation. The words obviously resonated for present circumstances as well. He told PEOPLE magazine in that long ago September of 1981 that “when you get tossed out on the street, you’re not sure you can go through the unpeeling of layers to get to know somebody. I ain’t sayin’ I’m a hard case, but the next one is going to have to be carrying notes from the Pope.” The next one, fortunately, was a lovely lady who only wanted to go for a run. (“I don’t want to change your life, cowboy” –but she did.)
